Employee benefits vary from company to company.  I met with a business owner of a pretty large company in New Jersey who pays 100% of his employees’ benefits!  You don’t see too many companies offering that nowadays.  Yet, he hasn’t told his employees how much those benefits actually cost the company.

It’s so important to inform your employees of how much you contribute to their health costs and other benefits.  They need to see the value of what you provide in addition to their salaries  as part of their total compensation.

Last week, I was at my Edison, NJ dentist for my routine cleaning.  Dr. Nandra at Serenity Dental Care.  I highly recommend her!  No cavities this time around so I am a pretty happy guy.  As I was sitting in the dentist chair sucking on the air tube, I thought it would be fitting to talk about dental insurance for my next blog post and business insurance video.  So here it goes…

Dental insurance can be split into three types of services:

  • Preventative services (bi-annual cleanings and x-rays)
  • Basic services (root canals, extractions, fillings, etc.)
  • Major services (crowns, dentures, retainers).

These types of services can vary depending on the plan you have.  Usually your insurance company will pay for 100% for preventive care.  But basic and major services coverage can range from 100% to as low as 50% of the total price depending on how your plan is designed.

Make sure your dentist is in your network BEFORE you go see them.  A lot of dental plans are PPO plans.  If the dentist is not in your network, it will cost you more.

Insurance terms (and coverages!) can be confusing. In our newest video, Alan takes the time to go through general insurance terminology that any business MUST know and understand when buying health insurance; or any business insurance policy. You also need to have the right information about your company and employees to get a competitive health insurance quote.

The more we talk to small businesses, the more we realize that most business owners we talk to really don’t know what type of business insurance and how much coverage they need.  Alan explains a variety of different types of business insurance, how they work, and why you need it.  Don’t worry.  We’re going to be producing a lot more business insurance videos for all of you so we’re going to eventually get into all of them.

And, hey, I’m not just about insurance.  Check out the electric car I built or my rant about buying two left gloves at my local hardware store.

Is there an insurance topic you’re interested in?  Shoot me a note, I’d love your feedback and suggestions.

The election results are in and the Republicans have retaken the House of Representatives.

Talk about the healthcare bill will once again be brought to the forefront of Congress. The Congress will attempt to change the present Health Care Initiative and this will put the entire Health Care system in turmoil again.

The new initiatives from the first bill have mixed reviews and have caused carriers to increase premiums. Options to employers have minimized while the premiums charged continue to escalate.

My clients ask me what they can do and I try to give them viable options to maintain the healthcare programs for their companies.

There will come a point where the choice will between giving a healthcare program or keep an employee working. The healthcare plan for that company will end. There will be a time when a small employer with less than 50 employees will NOT offer health plans.  It will be simply unaffordable.

So what steps do you take now as an employer?

Get the employees involved!  Either have them all in on the meetings or have them choose an employee representative to hear what the plans and costs are.

Most companies believe that they alone need to choose a plan.

This will not reduce the costs from the carriers but you might be surprised at the input from the employees.

Get the employees involved.
